Hiking and Exploring in the West Kootenays!

BC has some of the most spectacular scenery in the country and we have decided that this is our year to start exploring the area and taking in some of that breathtaking beauty. As the snow has melted off the southern facing slopes and lower regions, we’ve begun planning weekly hikes to see more of our surroundings.

Fortunately, there is a wonderful website (and a new book which I have ordered, LOL!) that details a lot of the local hikes, telling us, not only how to get there, but how much elevation to expect, the distance and a MAP!! We have already made good use of it.

Our first hike was at Syringa Provincial Park, near Castlegar. (about 8 km with a 200+m elevation). Next we traveled to Kaslo and explored a 4 km Riverside trail with it’s ‘cool’ statues and then up the Cedar Creek loop to the Ainsworth Hotsprings Pioneer cemetery. And just this past weekend we explored Zuckerberg Island in Castlegar.

Hiking is a great way for us to enjoy the spring sunshine, get some good exercise and explore our surroundings. And… I’m planning some letterboxes to plant (hide) along the way. More on that in another newletter. For now, here are some pics of the scenery we’ve been enjoying.
