And… we have turkeys!

And… we have turkeys!

Not domestic turkeys… that would be a whole other story. But… this is the time of year that the wild turkeys congregate in our yard. This morning when I got up there were 20 hens and two very happy toms in the yard. They are usually here for several weeks before the hens break off one-by-one and make their way back into the forest to lay eggs and sit on their nests. They do often come back with a few poults in tow, but not in the same concentrations we see right now.

Our new kitten, Palu, is fascinated by them. Obviously, they are way too big for her to pose any threat, and they totally ignore her. But she spends her day skirting around the flock and watching them from behind one object or another.

I need to dodge the turkey poos that get left on the lawn when I go out to tend to my rabbits and chickens, but I don’t mind that much. Turkeys are really good at cleaning up ticks and we actually haven’t had any trouble with them in the immediate vicinity of our yard. So, I’m happy to have them here and it’s fun to watch the cats watching them.

I love living in a place where nature comes right to our doorstep.
