Projects and Seasons

I sometimes laugh when I look around the house, the yard, the office, the spare room. There are projects-in-progress everywhere.

Years ago, I used to feel guilty about all of these unfinished projects. I wondered why I couldn’t simply finish one thing before moving on to the next. Over time, though, I realized something important. Most of these projects aren’t abandoned. They’re simply waiting for their season. Each one of them engages my creative nature in a different way. As I circle from one project to another – and eventually back again — I continue to learn, solve problems and discover new ideas. It is my way of being staying curious and continually growing.

Right now, the pond needs a relining and one corner raised by 2” before I can get the bog and waterfalls fixed up and working. The new chicken coop is patiently awaiting a roof. Just last week I was immersed in business systems thinking. Now I’m watching tiny chicks explore the chicken yard while waiting for lumber to dry after several days of rain. My family history research is on pause for the summer as my focus for this time is on the outdoors. And on rainy afternoons, I continue adding pages to my Everything You Need to Know binder—a project that I hope won’t be needed for many years, but one that gives me peace of mind knowing it will help Mark and Alex if the unexpected ever happens.

I’ve stopped measuring my life by how many projects are finished. Instead, I measure it by whether the things that matter continue to move forward, even if it’s only one small step at a time. Sometimes a season is for building. Sometimes it’s for learning. Sometimes it’s simply for waiting until the weather changes. And sometimes, it’s simply for trusting that unfinished doesn’t mean forgotten.

It just means the season isn’t quite right… yet.
